Atabey Cigars is a super‑premium, micro‑batch brand created by legendary Cuban‑trained designer and blender Nelson Alfonso under his boutique house Selected Tobacco. It is widely regarded as one of the most exclusive, aged cigar lines outside of Cuba.
Brand and story
-
The name “Atabey” comes from a Taíno goddess of fertility and motherhood, tying the brand to Indigenous Caribbean culture and the mythological roots of the Cohiba story.
-
Alfonso, best known for designing the Cohiba Behike band and the Padron 50th Anniversary humidor, blends and directs the entire Atabey line himself, emphasizing luxury packaging, small‑batch precision, and a very tight “Cuban‑style” aesthetic.
Production and aging
-
Atabey cigars are hand‑rolled in Costa Rica at the Tobacos de Costa Rica factory and then aged for at least five years in climate‑controlled rooms lined with Spanish cedar and French oak, with humidity and airflow reset every two weeks to “cleanse” the tobacco and polish harshness.
-
Some lines, such as the Atabey Dioses 10‑Year Extra Aged, are aged for a full decade, making them among the longest‑rested commercially released cigars on the market.
Blend and profile
-
The exact blend is kept secret, but the standard Atabey line is widely believed to use an Ecuadorian wrapper (often Habano‑style shade) over a proprietary long‑filler core, with some reports citing a touch of Peruvian ligero and undisclosed Nicaraguan and Dominican tobaccos.
-
Strength is mild to medium, with a remarkably clean, creamy, and aromatic profile; common notes include cream, honey, almonds, floral touches, light spice, and subtle tropical‑fruit or citrus character, delivered with a long, smooth finish.
