La Flor Dominicana (LFD) is a bold, family‑owned Dominican brand founded in the mid‑1990s by Litto and Inés Gomez, now known for rich, full‑bodied cigars built almost entirely on the company’s own estate‑grown tobaccos.
Origins and brand story
-
Litto Gomez, a former jeweler in Miami, and his wife Inés launched their first short‑lived brand Los Libertadores in the early 1990s before pivoting to La Flor Dominicana in 1996, starting production with just a handful of rollers in Santiago.
-
They quickly shifted from mild Dominican standards to heavier blends with more estate‑grown Dominican ligero, giving their cigars a stronger, more complex profile than many of their neighbors.
Farms, factory, and innovation
-
The Gomezes bought their own farms in La Canela, Dominican Republic, giving them tight control over seed, growing, curing, and sorting, which they tie directly to the brand’s intense, yet balanced, character.
-
The brand has become a benchmark for innovation: patent‑style “Chisel” heads (no cap punch needed), figurados like the famous Andalusian Bull, and high‑ligero lines such as Double Ligero and Ligero/Core that pushed the idea of “powerful but thoughtful” Dominican cigars.
Style and signature lines
-
LFD is known for medium‑to‑full or full‑bodied blends with spicy, peppery, nutty, and slightly sweet profiles, carried by estate‑grown Dominican tobaccos and a mix of wrappers such as Sumatra, Cameroon, and Ecuadorian Habano.
-
Landmark lines include:
-
La Flor Dominicana (core line),
-
Double Ligero and Double Ligero 700 (ligero‑heavy, potent cigars),
-
Cameroon Cabinet (African‑grown wrapper over a bold Dominican core),
-
Andalusian Bull (2016 Cigar Aficionado “Cigar of the Year”), and
-
LFD 30 Years (commemorative Chisel‑shaped Sumatra‑wrapped tribute to the brand’s 30‑year run).
