Plasencia Cigars is a family‑owned Nicaraguan powerhouse with roots stretching back to 1865, now one of the world’s largest premium tobacco growers and cigar manufacturers, producing both its own brand and dozens of other labels.
Family history and operations
-
The Plasencia story begins in Cuba when Don Eduardo Plasencia emigrated from the Canary Islands in 1865 and started growing tobacco in the famous Vuelta Abajo region.
-
After the Cuban Revolution, the family rebuilt in Nicaragua and then Honduras, surviving fires, revolution, and disease, before Nestor Plasencia Sr. and later his son Nestor Jr. anchored large‑scale leaf production and cigar manufacturing in Estelí and beyond.
Growers, factories, and scale
-
Today the Plasencia family farms about 1,200 hectares (roughly 3,000 acres) of tobacco across Nicaragua and Honduras, with smaller plots in Costa Rica and Panama, supplying about half of their harvest to outside brands and half to their own cigars.
-
They run multiple factories in Nicaragua and Honduras, rolling more than 40 million cigars a year, including Plasencia‑branded lines plus 30+ other brands that rely on their tobacco and production.
Brand philosophy and style
-
Plasencia the brand launched in 2017, marking a deliberate shift from being “just” a supplier to also being a consumer‑facing label with a strong identity and storytelling.
-
House blends tend to be medium to medium‑full, with a focus on balance, complexity, and clean, aromatic smoke, often showcasing Nicaraguan long‑filler and a range of wrappers such as Habano, Connecticut, Maduro, and Cameroon.
