Patina Cigars is a boutique brand founded by Mo Maali in 2017, built around the idea of “beauty in age” and cigars that evolve with nuance rather than brute strength.
Brand and philosophy
-
The name Patina refers to the natural aging/oxidation on bronze and copper, used as a metaphor for how life experience shapes character while the core remains true.
-
Maali’s vision is for Patina to be the cigar people reach for to celebrate milestones, decompress, and connect with others, with his “heart and soul” explicitly tied to each blend.
Core lines and blends
-
Connecticut: Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper over Nicaraguan & Pennsylvania binder/filler, a slightly spicier, fuller Connecticut that “changes how you view” the style, offered in five sizes.
-
Habano: Ecuadorian Habano wrapper with Nicaraguan and Pennsylvania insides; noted for smooth spice, balance, and value, with multiple 94‑point reviews from Katman and The Cigar Authority.
-
Maduro: Designed to challenge maduro stereotypes with a mix of balance, flavor, and strength; the Rustic vitola has scored highly (90 from halfwheel, 100 from Katman) and won Cigar Dojo’s “Under the Radar Cigar of the Year.”
-
Sumatra: Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, Connecticut Broadleaf binder, U.S. and Nicaraguan fillers, medium‑full with spice and underlying sweetness.
Limiteds and growth
-
Patina has expanded beyond the initial three cores with blends like Oro de Nicaragua, anniversary editions, and limited releases such as the 5‑Year Anniversary, which Developing Palates named its #1 cigar of 2023.
-
The strategy is core‑line first, with limiteds used sparingly to celebrate milestones rather than as constant hype drops.
