Arturo Fuente Cigars is one of the most historic and respected premium cigar families in the world, founded in 1912 and now famous for iconic lines like Hemingway, Don Carlos, and Fuente Fuente OpusX.
Origins and survival story
-
The company began in 1912 when Arturo Fuente Sr. started making cigars in West Tampa, Florida, using Cuban tobacco like many “clear Havana” makers of the era.
-
A catastrophic factory fire in 1924 halted production for more than 20 years; the brand only restarted in 1946 on the back porch of the family home in Ybor City, with family members hand‑rolling to keep the name alive.
Moving beyond Cuba and rebuilding abroad
-
After the 1960 U.S. embargo on Cuba, the Fuentes gradually shifted away from Cuban leaf, experimenting with tobacco from Puerto Rico, Colombia, and other regions while trying to preserve a Havana‑like taste.
-
Rising labor costs and a shortage of rollers pushed production out of Florida; attempts in Mexico and Puerto Rico didn’t meet their standards, so they moved to Nicaragua—only to lose that factory to fire during the Nicaraguan Revolution in 1979.
Dominican era and growth
-
In the early 1980s the family finally established stable production in Santiago, Dominican Republic, founding Tabacalera A. Fuente y Cía and slowly expanding facilities and workforce.
-
By the late 1980s and 1990s, the company had grown into one of the world’s largest handmade cigar producers, eventually surpassing 30 million cigars per year across multiple Dominican factories.
Landmark cigars and innovation
-
The Hemingway Series, launched in the 1980s, popularized beautifully made Dominican perfectos and helped define Fuente’s reputation for craftsmanship.
-
In 1995 the family released Fuente Fuente OpusX, the first widely celebrated cigar with Dominican‑grown wrapper, proving that world‑class wrapper could be grown there and reshaping expectations for non‑Cuban cigars.
Style and reputation today
-
Fuente cigars are known for classic, refined profiles: balanced spice, sweetness, and aroma, with meticulous construction and consistent quality across lines from value‑oriented to ultra‑premium.
-
Beyond its own brands (Arturo Fuente, Hemingway, Don Carlos, OpusX, Montesino, and more), the company also makes cigars for other high‑end labels, reinforcing its status as a cornerstone of the Dominican premium cigar industry.
